XC District Mini Meet

WINCHESTER — The Handley boys and girls cross country teams each took first place at the Northwestern District mini meet held at the Third Battle of Winchester course Wednesday.

Led by individual winner Aaron Arslan (16 minutes and 23 seconds), the Handley boys scored 32 points to beat second-place Millbrook (40) by eight points. Skyline was third with 81 points, James Wood was fourth with 91 and Sherando was fifth with 136. Mountain View Christian Academy also participated and scored 173 points.

James Wood’s Sophia Dorsey won the girls’ race by 12 seconds in 21:05.

Besides Arslan, others who paced the Judges were Garrett Patnode (fifth in 17:41), John Delaney (seventh in 18:00), Cole Talton (eighth in 18:09) and Casey Marchant (10th in 18:23).

Millbrook’s Tyler Cox-Philyaw took second behind Arslan in 16:29. The Pioneers were also led by Alec Schrank (third in 16:55), Garrett Bloodworth (sixth in 17:51) and Tom Carty (12th in 18:33).

James Wood was led by Andrew Shade (fourth in 17:28) and Max Lindquist (15th in 18:46). Sherando was paced by Jahlil Northover (11th in 18:32) and Garrett Allegra (25th in 19:27). MVCA was led by Josh Medina (30th in 19:45, a school-record) and David Snyder (33rd in 20:22).

While the Handley boys had five of the top 10 spots, the Judges girls claimed five of the top nine positions. Ellie Selzer was third in 21:20, Nicole King was fourth in 21:33, Elise Smith was sixth in 22:15, Ruthie Rosenfeld was seventh in 22:16, and Sydney Aschenbrenner was ninth in 22:27.

In addition to Dorsey, James Wood was paced by Maria Harter (eighth in 22:21), Claire Bright (10th in 22:58), Lydia Sunderlin (13th in 23:22) and Halle Esparza (15th in 23:29).

Millbrook was led by Hannah Croyle (second in 21:17), Mellany Groll (fifth in 22:06) and McKenzie Schrank (12th in 23:03). Leading Sherando was Emily Askew (16th in 23:30) and Sarah Brewer (22nd in 24:01).
