James Wood Boys, Girls Capture District Cross Country Mini

STEPHENS CITY — The James Wood boys and girls each took first place at the Northwestern District mini meet Wednesday at Sherando High School.

Individually, Handley’s Aaron Arslan won the boys’ race by five seconds in 16 minutes and 20 seconds, and James Wood’s Sophia Dorsey won by 13 seconds with a time of 19:47.

In the boys’ meet, James Wood scored 34 points to defeat Handley (57), Skyline (66), Millbrook (79) and Sherando (124). In the girls’ meet, James Wood had 23 points, Millbrook had 58, Handley and Sherando had 76 (with Handley edging the Warriors on a tiebreaker) and Skyline had 143.

Scoring performances for James Wood came from Jacksen Costa (third in 16:31), Max Lindquist (fifth, 16:58), Kevin Konyar (seventh, 17:28), Aaron Curd (ninth, 17:46) and Ethan Pierce (10th, 17:48).

In addition to Arslan, Handley was led by John Delaney (second in 16:25.6) and Casey Marchant (11th in 17:50). Millbrook was paced by Tom Carty (fourth in 16:44) and Kevin Kleinegger (15th in 18:01), and Sherando was paced by Jacob Duncan (18:29) and Zack Brown (18:53).

Scoring for the James Wood girls besides Dorsey were Autumn Hottle (second in 20:00), Haley Witt (fourth in 20:31), Maria Harter (sixth in 21:08) and Claire Bright (10th in 21:46).

The Millbrook girls were led by Kaycee Cox-Philyaw (third in 20:25), Maddie Lloyd (seventh in 21:15), Sophie Edlich (ninth in 21:28) and Emily Muldowney (12th in 21:57). For Sherando, Hannah Mothrop placed fifth (20:57) and Isabel O’Neil placed 14th (22:17). For Handley, Amanda Kesler placed eighth (21:19) and Kelly Boppe placed 13th (22:04).
