Wood's Spaid, Patrick earn top VHSL volleyball honors

James Wood sophomore Kennedy Spaid was named the Player of the Year and Colonels coach Adrienne Patrick was selected as the Coach of the Year by the Virginia High School League as part of the Class 4 All-State volleyball selections that were released on Monday.

Spaid is one of four All-State selections for the Colonels, who went 27-2 to set a program record for wins and captured their second straight title. Patrick was also named the Class 4 Coach of the Year after guiding James Wood to its first state championship in program history last year.

The outside hitter Spaid is joined on the First Team by sophomore outside hitter/defensive specialist Brenna Corbin and senior setter/opposite Paige Ahakuelo. Senior middle hitter Ashlynn Spence made the Second Team. Both Spaid and Corbin were First Team All-State selections last year.

Spaid led James Wood with 346 kills, a .339 hitting percentage and 338 serve receptions. She also had 193 digs (second on the team) and 54 aces (third).

Corbin had a team-high 345 digs and 68 aces and had 115 kills.

Ahakuelo ranked second on the Colonels with 309 assists, 169 kills and 60 aces and third with 185 digs.

Spence ranked second on the team in blocks (60), third in kills (147) and had 127 digs and 27 aces.
