Boy's Soccer: Handley 2, James Wood 1

From Star Staff Reports

WINCHESTER — Zac Gordon’s goal with 2:46 left lifted Handley to a 2-1 victory over James Wood in Tuesday’s Northwestern District boys’ soccer match at the Handley Bowl.

Graham Sharples assisted on Gordon’s game winner in the closing minutes to cap an unbeaten district season for the Judges (13-3, 8-0). Sharples collided with James Wood goalkeeper Elliot Shiben, and Gordon was able to walk it into the net after the collision.

Handley’s Eduardo Santiago scored the equalizer off an assist from Mac O’Brien in the 60th minute.

James Wood’s Matt Henriques scored in the 11th minute to give the Colonels a 1-0 advantage at the half.

Shiben made five saves for the Colonels.

Handley goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi made six saves.

The Judges won the Blue Ridge Youth Soccer Association Cup — given to the Frederick County/Winchester team with the best record — for the fourth time in the last six years. Top-seeded Handley awaits the winner of Thursday’s district tournament play-in game between No. 4 Millbrook and No. 5 Skyline in Saturday’s tournament semifinals at 1 p.m. at James Wood.
