Boy's Tennis Preview

Coach: Gene Lewis, 2nd year.
Last year: 8-8.

Key losses:
Thomas Wilson, Joe Damron, John Stanfield, Rusty Jenkins.

Top returning players:
Thom Schweitzer, Jr.; Devin Carter, Soph.; Chris Haskiell, Jr.; Preston Kemp, Soph.; Ben Huff, Soph.

Top newcomers:
Derek Hill, Soph.; Chad Schott, Soph.; Michael Weimer, Fr.; Austin Messick, Soph.; Javier Juarez, Soph.

Outlook:
The Colonels lost four seniors (who filled the top four spots) to graduation last year, and Lewis doesn’t have any seniors on his 11-man roster this season.

“We’re going to struggle losing four seniors and our top four guys,” Lewis said. “We’re very young. Improvement is our big thing. I’ve seen definite improvement from last year from my returners.”

Schweitzer, Carter and Haskiell are in the mix for the top three spots, but all three will face much stiffer competition than last year. Schweitzer played No. 5, Carter played No. 6 and Haskiell played mostly doubles.

Lewis hopes this year serves as a springboard into the future.
“My main goal is to see improvement and for these guys to stick around,” Lewis said. “I think we’ll be able to compete with some schools, but it’s definitely a rebuilding year.”

First match: March 24 at Washington, 4:30
