GIRLS’ TENNIS - Conference 21 West Tournament

WINCHESTER — Millbrook’s unbeaten Cecilia Cress will face Sherando’s Abigail Sears in the championship singles match of the Conference 21 West tournament today.

Cress rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over James Wood’s Megan Hillyard in the semifinals. Sears surprised defending champion Meredith Watts of Handley 7-6, 7-6 in the semifinals. Sears beat Woodgrove’s Dorothy Dimetrew 6-0,6-0 in the first round.

The title match is slated for Handley’s Slaughter Tennis Pavilion at 11 a.m., but will move to Winchester Country Club in case of inclement weather. Both players have clinched Region 4A West berths.

Hillyard advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Harrisonburg’s Lucie Rutherford.

In doubles, Sears and Kathryn Robertson rolled with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Woodgrove. Hillyard and Taylin Crosen whipped Harrisonburg 6-1, 6-3. Top-seeded Watts and Josie Sydnor and second-seeded Cress and Kyle Buza had byes. The doubles semifinals start at 1 p.m., with the finals at 3 p.m.
