James Wood earns rare win over Handley in girls' tennis

WINCHESTER — The James Wood girls’ tennis team beat Handley for the first time in ninth-year head coach Sharon Sweet’s tenure on Tuesday 6-3 by sweeping the three doubles matches.

James Wood is 3-1 (1-1 Class 4 Northwestern District) while Handley is 0-3, 0-2.

Singles winners — James Wood: 3. Katelyn Harris 8-3, 5. Caroline Partlow 8-1, 6. Maggie Utz 8-1. Handley: 1. Lillian Smith 8-3; 2. Meredith Larsen 8-3; 4. Samantha Thomas 8-4.

Doubles winners — James Wood: 1. Kimble-Burner 8-4; 2. Harris-Aycock 8-4; 3. Partlow-Utz (9-8, 7-3 tiebreaker).
