Basketball - Conference 21 West Honors

WINCHESTER — Handley junior point guard Michael Brown was named the Conference 21 West Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year and Millbrook junior center Haile McDonald was named the Conference 21 West Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year in selections announced on Monday.

The players’ coaches, Jason Toton of Handley and Erick Green Sr. of Millbrook, were named by the conference as the boys’ and girls’ coaches of the year, respectively. Both coaches led their teams to Conference 21 West tournament championships and on Monday, their teams each clinched state tournament berths.

Brown was joined on the boys’ first team by teammates Kobe Tigney, a junior guard, and Kevin Curry, a sophomore forward.

 Rounding out the first team are Millbrook junior guard Jordan Funk, Sherando senior guard Alex Morefield, James Wood senior guard Aidan Houser, Harrisonburg senior Kajuan Madden and Woodgrove junior Owen Fuller.

Second-team selections are: Handley junior forward Gus Wise and junior guard Keevon Martin, Millbrook junior forward Trammell Anthony and freshman guard Jordan Jackson, Sherando junior guard Aaron Banks, James Wood senior forward Noah Sullivan, Harrisonburg senior Malachi Simmons and Woodgrove sophomore Alex Owen.

McDonald is joined on the girls’ first team by three teammates in junior guards Maddie Green and Erika Reed and junior forward Amari Anthony.

Other first-team selections are Sherando senior guard Davina Lane, James Wood freshman guard Makayla Firebaugh, and the Woodgrove duo of Camryn Fagan (senior) and Lily Forrester (junior).

Second-team selections are: James Wood’s Hannah Arnold (senior forward), Amber Wooldridge (junior forward) and Amanda Christian (senior guard), Sherando junior guard Amber Garrett, Handley sophomore guard Neysha Washington, Woodgrove senior Jordan Wick, and Harrisonburg’s Constance Komara (junior) and Jakaha Brandon (freshman).
