Wood's Firebaugh named first team all-state

5c9025ff9c9ca.imageCHARLOTTESVILLE — Handey senior forward D’Andre James and James Wood junior guard Makayla Firebaugh were named to the Class 4 all-state first team for boys' and girls' basketball, respectively, in selections released on Tuesday by the Virginia High School League.

James led Handley in scoring with 14.6 points per game and led the area in field goal percentage (65.7), making 138 of 210 shots. James also made 75 of 110 free throws (.682).

Louisa County's Chris Shelton was named the Class 4 Player of the Year and George Washington-Danville's Jermaine Parker was named the Coach of the Year.

Firebaugh led the area in scoring this year with 24.5 points and also averaged 6.6 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 2.6 assists.

The Class 4 Girls' Player of the Year was Lake Taylor's JaNaiya Quinerly and Lake Taylor's Saundra Sawyer was named the Coach of the Year.
