State Indoor Track Meet

LYNCHBURG — Sherando senior Chris Smith won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches at the Group AA State Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at Liberty University.

Smith, who won the Group AA outdoor state high jump title in the spring, won by two inches over Smithfield’s Marquis Childress.

Other local athletes who placed at the meet were Handley sophomore Dontae Mauck in the 55 meters (fourth in 6.61 seconds); Judges senior Lisa Meneau in the 300 (sixth in 41.86); James Wood senior Amber Hawkins in the 1,600 (sixth in 5:17.59) and the 1,000 (eighth in 3:08.86); Colonels sophomore Katie Houser in the high jump (eighth with a 5-2); and Sherando senior Nisha Moore in the 500 (seventh in 1:21.45).

In the team competitions, Blacksburg won the boys’ meet with 58 points, Lafayette was second with 56, Sherando tied for 18th with 10, and Handley tied for 26th with 5. Tabb won the girls’ meet with 56 points, Blacksburg was second with 45, James Wood tied for 29th with 5, Handley was 36th with 3, and Sherando tied for 37th with 2.
