Local athletes shine for CNU at CAC meet

NEWPORT NEWS — James Wood High School graduate Sarah Johnson led the way for NCAA Division III Christopher Newport University athletes at the Capital Athletic Conference indoor meet that was completed on Saturday at the Freeman Center.

A senior, Johnson placed second in the shot put with a mark of 40-7.5 and placed fourth in the weight throw with a mark of 48-6.25 that equaled the school record set by Hannah Shoemaker last year. Johnson helped CNU place second in the CAC with 135 points, 19 behind Salisbury.

In the men’s meet, Johnson’s younger brother Sam, a sophomore who graduated from Sherando, placed fourth in the shot put (44-4.25) and fifth in the weight throw (48-2.75). Clarke County graduate and junior Ian Dors placed seventh in the 800 (2:00.56). The two helped CNU win its fourth straight indoor title with 129 points, five more than Salisbury (124).
