Class 4 State Indoor Track - Day 1

LYNCHBURG — Handley junior Jaishaun Offutt broke a school record with his final throw to win the boys’ shot put title on the opening day of the Class 4 state indoor track & field championships at Liberty University on Monday.

Offutt’s toss of 56 feet, 1 inch gave him the title. He was tied with Tuscarora’s Tate Foerester (54-6) prior to the winner.

Much of the afternoon was spent on qualifying heats for Tuesday’s finals, but several events were decided.

In the girls’ high jump, Sherando’s Mercedes Silver (5-0) and Millbrook’s Janai Washington (4-10) placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

In the boys’’ 4x800-meter relay, Sherando (Jed Bell, Noah Harris, Brock Smith, Dylan McGraw) placed sixth in 8 minutes, 6.12 seconds. James Wood (Eli Clark, William Andrews, Will Simko and Ethan Pratt-Perez) were 10th in 8:19.09.

In the girls’ 4x800, James Wood (Lauren Thompson, Alina Kieffer, Kaitlin Combs and Ruby Ostrander) placed ninth in 10:12.76.
