WINCHESTER — With the girls’ competition hanging in the balance, James Wood junior Emalee Firestein anchored a winning 400-meter freestyle relay at the end of the Northwestern District dual swim meet Friday at Jim Barnett Park to give her Colonels an 86-84 victory over Millbrook.

“Coach told us before the race that we really needed a win, so we were ready,” Firestein said. “We stepped it up and got the points we needed.”

Wood’s team of Cate Beach, Katie Moss, Alex Lew, and Firestein took the final relay with a time of 4:47.44. The Colonels team of Rachel Carson, Kelsea Farinholt, Amanda Putprush, and Julia Collette took third to help Wood nip the Pioneers.
