James Wood High School 16-year-old junior

Sport: Tennis. Positions: No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles
Parent: Heidi Lucas
Hometown: Winchester
What do you love about tennis?: At this point, it’s just more than a sport. It’s like an escape from everything.
Most memorable moment in tennis: Just making it to regionals for the first time [last year] was definitely the most memorable. It felt rewarding, like all my hard work paid off.
Most embarrassing moment in tennis: Probably when I whiffed a serve so bad it went 150 feet out.
Most difficult moment in tennis: Losing [the Morgan Dennis Cup] tournament when I was two points away from winning last year. I was playing against a five-star, and I definitely could’ve beaten him, but I just wasn’t able to pull it off.
Three people you can have dinner with, dead or alive: My [personal] tennis coach [Jamie Morgan]; he’s always been there for me. Definitely my mom, too; I know it’s basic, but I always like to have dinner with her. And I guess my last person would be Roger Federer just because he’s my idol.
Biggest athletic influence?: Jamie. He’s never really given up on me and we’ve been though similar struggles in life, so I’ve been able to just look up to him and always admire him.
Favorite teacher: My anatomy teacher Stephanie Britton. I’ve always liked anatomy, and she makes the class really fun. She’s definitely been the best teacher I’ve had.
Favorite athlete: Roger Federer
Favorite sports team: Baltimore Ravens
Favorite movie: “Nacho Libre”
Favorite song: “2AM” by BigXthaPlug
Favorite food: Chicken and rice
Worst thing you’ve eaten: A mac and cheese smoothie
Plans after high school: I’m planning on going to college. I’d like to become a neurosurgeon when I get older. I’m also trying to play Division I tennis, but it’s a lot harder than it sounds.
