STERLING — Doug Stonier thought he had played the perfect defensive play.

The James Wood senior went up to defend a long pass against Potomac Falls’ Chad McMichael, but couldn’t make the play he needed. McMichael grabbed the ball out of the air above Stonier for a 41-yard gain on a critical play in the fourth quarter.

“[McMichael] just made a great play,” Stonier said. “They just made a few great plays when they needed to tonight.”

The pass play set up the Panthers’ go-ahead touchdown, which led to a 26-17 win over the Colonels in the Region II, Division 4 semifinals on Friday. The Panthers (10-1) will play at Dulles-District rival Broad Run next week in the regional final.
