STEPHENS CITY — On sheets of paper handed out by the Colonels’ seniors were famous quotes to complement their season-long slogan: “It’s hard to beat a team that never gives up.”

Hopefully April Salyer, Haley Smith, Whitney Snapp, Chelsea Wingfield or Sara Michael made extra copies.

On the brink of elimination on Tuesday, James Wood couldn’t give up as it rarely faced a deficit, upsetting the first-seeded Sherando Warriors 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-19).

It was Sherando’s first district loss since Aug. 22 against Millbrook, and the Colonels’ first victory in three tries this season against the Warriors.

James Wood will advance to take on second-seeded Millbrook in the Northwestern District tournament finals on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Millbrook. The winner earns a berth to regionals.
