Ceremonies for the 19th annual induction begin with a reception at 4:30 p.m., followed by the 5:15 ceremony in the James Wood auditorium. The event is open to the public. Twin sisters Aimee Stickley Hoffmann and Jennifer Stickley Newlin will join their older sister Stacey Stickley, who was inducted in 2011, marking the only family to have three members in the Hall of Fame. Jennifer’s husband, soccer-standout Chris Newlin, also is being inducted, along with former basketball great Doug Snapp and contributors Polly and Gary Nail.
Aimee Stickley Hoffmann, ’97, excelled in volleyball, basketball and softball at James Wood. She played volleyball all four years, earning three letters and serving as team captain. Her senior season, she was the Northwestern District Player of the year and voted onto the First Team All-District and All-Region squads, as well as Second Team All-State.
In 1997, she was the Winchester Star Volleyball Player of the Year and played in the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-star game. She also was named to the Apple-Capital All-Tournament Team both her junior and senior years. She received the MVP Volleyball Award given by the JW Athletic Association in 1996 and 1997 and was named to the All-Northwestern District Second-Team in 1996. She was captain of the Colonels 1997 team that won the regular season district title with a 17-0 record and went on to win the district tournament and finish as Region II runner-up and state semi-finalist. She currently ranks tenth in career sets in the JW record books with 787.

Christopher B. Newlin, ’98, is being inducted for his excellence in soccer. A goalkeeper drafted up to the varsity midway through his freshman year, he quickly became known as a goal-keeping force in the region. His sophomore season, he was named Soccer Player of the Year by both the Winchester Star and the Northern Virginia Daily, setting a single-season record for saves (243) that still ranks atop the Colonels record books.
As a freshman, even though he only played varsity a half-season, he was named to the Winchester Star All-Area Team (honorable mention) and then to the Star’s All-Area first team his sophomore, junior and senior years. He also was named to the Northern Virginia Daily’s All-Area First Team in 1996, ’97 and ’98.
A four-year varsity letterman at JW, Newlin was named to the All-Northwestern-District 2nd Team in 1996 and to the All-District 1st Team his junior and senior years. Newlin won the Defensive Player of the Year Award given by the JWAA in 1997 and 1998 and was selected to play in the Virginia High School League All-Star soccer game following his senior year.
A decade later, Newlin still holds JWHS records for single-season saves (243) and career saves (658). His career save number is nearly double that of the next closest Colonel goalie.
Also at James Wood, Newlin earned one varsity letter in football and led his freshman and JV basketball teams in steals and assists. He received the JWAA’s Archie Manuel Scholarship award.
While playing soccer for the Colonels, he also was active in travel/club soccer, playing for the Premier Division Reston Cardinals, who won the Virginia State Cup Championship in the U-18 class in 1997. Following high school, he played one year of college soccer at Old Dominion University before pursuing a career in medicine.
Doug C. Snapp, ’65, is being inducted for his excellence in basketball. A four-year varsity letterman, Snapp was the point guard and playmaker who led the Colonels to the Northwestern District title and a runner-up finish in the Virginia state high school championship game in 1965. He scored 19 points to lead the Colonels in that state championship contest.
He was named to the All-Northwestern District first team his senior year and voted onto the All-State 3rd team by the Virginia Sports Writers and Broadcasters Association. Snapp received the JWAA Basketball Award in both his junior and senior years. In addition to basketball, he also participated in varsity track his sophomore and junior years.
Gary and Polly Nail, a husband and wife team, are being inducted for their service and dedication to James Wood athletics in many capacities. The Nails, who own and operate Nail’s Cabinet Shop, Inc., donated and built the entire façade, cabinetry, and setting for the P. Wendell Dick Hall of Fame display, located on a large balcony overlooking the Don Shirley Gymnasium at the high school.
“Their diligent hard work and time-consuming craftsmanship resulted in a custom, hand-crafted home for the Hall of Fame plaques to be displayed,” commented HOF namesake Wendell Dick. It is a source of pride and history for James Wood athletics and we are blessed by their creativity and commitment to the education and athletic community.”
Polly Nail, a 1970 James Wood graduate, baked items sold in the JW concession stands and contributed many hours of service there. Gary was a volunteer baseball assistant coach for the Colonels for more than 10 years.
