District Football Showdown

The Barr-Lindon Crimson Apple matchup everyone pointed to in August is just three days away.

Yes, the much-anticipated Sherando-Millbrook high school football contest is upon us, but it will have to settle for being the second biggest game in Frederick County Friday night. The spotlight belongs to longtime rivals Handley (7-1, 5-0 Northwestern District) and James Wood (8-1, 6-0). Perhaps there were some who thought these teams would be better than last year’s playoff qualifiers, but few could have expected both to be undefeated in district action and essentially playing a league championship.

Handley is known for its athletes, James Wood its fundamentals. Most of all, both should be known for their grittiness, determination and ability to adapt. They wouldn’t be playing for a title without these things, because neither team particularly shines statistically.
