Region 4D Track

WINCHESTER — Handley senior Emeryce Worrell won the 55- and 300-meter dashes to highlight action on Monday at the Region 4D indoor track & field meet at Shenandoah University’s Wilkins Center.

The defending Class 4 state champion in both events, Worrell won the 55 in 7.06 seconds (0.02 ahead of the runner-up) and the 300 in 40.34 (1.10 ahead of the runner-up).

Blacksburg captured both team titles.

The Bruins boys scored 98 points to lead 14 scoring teams. E.C. Glass was second with 88, Sherando was fourth (70.5), Handley was sixth (43), James Wood tied for 10th (16) and Millbrook was 13th (2).

The Blacksburg girls won with 197 points, 140 more than Charlottesville (57). James Wood (third with 53), Millbrook (fourth with 51), Handley (fifth with 40.5) and Sherando (sixth with 39.5) followed in the meet with 14 scoring teams.

Another local athlete who won multiple individual events was Handley junior Rylan Stribling (55 in 6.39 seconds to win by 0.18; 300 in 36.93 to win by 0.27).

The top three finishers in each event, as well as those with qualifying times and marks, qualified for the Class 4 state meet on March 4 at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

Handley girls’ leaders: 4×800 (EJ Mullins, Seneca Welpott, Audrey Rinker, Ella Warren), first, 10:25.71; 4×200 (E.J. Mullins, Monet Thomas, Worrell, Elisabeth Pitcock), first, 1:48.64.

Sherando girls’ leaders: McKenna Hardy (high jump, first, 5-3); Kalysta Falls (55 hurdles, second, 9.36); Ariana Stafford (shot put, second, 32-8).

Sherando boys’ leaders: Noah Harris (high jump, first, 6-2; 500, third, 1:08.87); Jed Bell (1,000, second, 2:38.78); 4×400 (Bell, Ryan Maki, Jack Bryant, Noah Harris), second, 3:35.59; Ryan Maki (1,600, third, 4:30.94); Niko Walker (high jump, tied for third, 5-10).
