James Wood to induct five into athletic Hall of Fame

James Wood High School will induct four athletes and a coach/athletic director into its P. Wendell Dick Hall of Fame on Friday.

The 25th annual ceremonies will begin with a reception at 5 p.m. outside the school’s gymnasium and will be followed by a ceremony in the George Washington Auditorium at 6 p.m. The inductees will be recognized on the field at halftime of the 7 p.m. football game against Dominion at Jerry Kelican Stadium.

Beth Schaible (2002)

Schaible competed in track & field, volleyball and basketball.

In track, Schaible was a four-year letter winner, specializing in the 400 and 800 meters. She was a member of two 3,200 district championship teams. In 2001 and 2002, she competed in the Group AA state championship meet, with her 3,200 relay team finishing third in a school-record time of 9 minutes, 42.54 seconds in 2002.

In volleyball, Schaible was a two-year letter winner, garnering Northwestern District Player of the Year honors in 2002. She was named First Team All-Area, First Team All-Region and Second Team All-State along with being named JWAA Volleyball Player of the Year. She was named the Northern Virginia Daily’s Player of the Year in 2002. She played in the 2002 state All-Star game. The 2002 team won the Northwestern District title and qualified for the state tournament.

In basketball, Schaible was a two-year letter winner and starter. She helped the 2001 team to a second-place finish in the district. That was the first team in the program to qualify for regionals in 29 years.

Schaible went on to play volleyball for four years for NCAA Division II Shepherd University.

Brian Scott (2004)

Scott competed in wrestling. At graduation, Scott was the winningest wrestler in school history and competed in three-straight state tournaments.

At 119 pounds his freshman year, Scott posted a record of 38-7. He was the AAA Cardinal District runner-up and placed fifth in the AAA Northwest Regional tournament.

At 125 pounds as a sophomore, Scott went 46-5 and was the AA Northwestern District tournament champion, placed third in Region II and finished second in the Group AA state tournament.

At 135 pounds as a junior, Scott went 42-1 and was Northwestern District, Region II and Group AA state champion. He was both The Winchester Star and the Northern Virginia Daily Wrestler of the Year.

At 140 pounds as a senior, Scott went 42-2 and was the Northwestern District and Region II champion and took second in Group AA. Scott repeated as Winchester Star Wrestler of the Year.

Scott received his undergraduate degree from West Virginia University and his masters from Shenandoah University.

Ashley Hillyard (2015)

Ashley Hillyard competed in volleyball and tennis. She earned eight letters during her career.

Her junior year in volleyball, Hillyard played as both a pin hitter and setter, helping her team to advance to the VHSL Class 4 state semifinals. She was named the Northwestern District Player of the Year, First Team All-District and Region II, and Second Team All-State. She was named the Winchester Star Player of the Year and the JWAA Volleyball Most Valuable Player.

As a senior, Hillyard was named First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Region. She earned the JWAA Volleyball Coaches Award. At the time of graduation, the JWHS record book showed she was in the top 10 in assists, total sets, kills in a season and digs in a season.

In tennis, Hillyard played in the No. 2 spot in singles and the No. 1 spot in doubles her junior year. Her doubles team that year qualified for the AA Regional Tournament. As a senior, she played in the No. 1 position and was selected to the Winchester Star All-Area First Team. She was named the JWAA Tennis Most Valuable Player.

Hillyard went on to play volleyball at Radford University for one year, then transferred to JMU, where she played club volleyball.

Katie Houser (2015)

Katie Houser competed in volleyball and track & field. For both the 2012-13 and 2014-15 school years, Houser was named The Winchester Star Girls’ Athlete of the Year.

A three-year volleyball outside hitter who missed her junior year due to injury, Houser still holds all-time school records for kills in a season (571), kills in a career (1,293) and kills in a match (36).

As a freshman, she was selected to The Winchester Star All-Area team.

As a sophomore, she was the Northwestern District Player of the Year, a Region II First Team selection and Second Team All-State. She was The Winchester Star Player of the Year.

As a senior, she led her team to the VHSL Class 4 state championship match, where the Colonels lost to Loudoun County during the Captains’ run of 14 state titles in 15 years. Houser was named the Class 4 State, Region II, Conference 21, Northwestern District and Winchester Star Player of the Year. Houser was named the JWAA Volleyball Most Valuable Player and received the John Moser Award as James Wood’s top female athlete. She also garnered selection on the Under-Armour All American Team.

As a sophomore in track, competing in the high jump with a stress fracture, she finished second at the state meet and qualified for the regional meet in the triple jump.

Houser attended Notre Dame University on a full athletic scholarship her freshman year, then transferred to the University of Georgia, where she was named team captain her senior year.

Craig Woshner (Coach and Coordinator of Student Activities)

Woshner coached the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams from 1993-2003. Woshner’s 2002 boys’ cross country team won the state title.

Woshner coached the girls’ track & field team from 1995-2002 and led the squad to a record of 162-101. In 1996, Woshner took over as the boys’ head coach and led them to a record of 125-128-1 through 2002. Woshner returned to coach the indoor track team in 2022-23 and 2023-24 and the outdoor track team in 2024.

Named James Wood’s CSA in 2003, Woshner served in this position for 19 years, the second-longest tenure in that position for the school. He oversaw 21 sports, with multiple teams qualifying for regional and state tournaments.

A graduate of University of Pittsburgh who ran for the Panthers, Woshner was inducted into the Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame in 2019.
