On Saturday, the James Wood volleyball team defeated Loudoun County 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 19-25, 25-18) in the Virginia High School League Class 4 championship match at Virginia State University in Petersburg.

The win gave the Colonels their fourth straight state championship. Previously, James Wood defeated Grafton (2022), Hanover (2023) and Courtland (2024) in the state title matches at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center in Richmond.

James Wood set a program record for wins in going 30-2 in 2025, with a 6-0 mark in the postseason that included the team’s fourth straight region title (the first in Region 4C, the last three in Region 4D). The Colonels traveled to beat Courtland and beat the Cougars 3-1 in the semifinals. Courtland came into the match with a a 27-1 record, 24 straight wins and a 2-1 defeat (best-of-three sets match) to Class 6 finalist Charles J. Colgan for its only loss.

The Colonels’ regular season included wins over Class 5 state finalists Riverside and Kellam, Class 4 state tournament qualifiers Loudoun County and Dominion (James Wood defeated the Titans in the quarterfinals), West Virginia Class AAAA semifinalist Musselman, Georgetown Day (District of Columbia State Athletic Association champions) and Flint Hill (Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state champion).

James Wood won three matches each against Millbrook, Handley and Sherando to extend its Winchester-Frederick County winning streak to 24 since October of 2022.

The Colonels are the first team in any sport in Frederick County to win four consecutive state titles. James Wood compiled a record of 108-8 in that time. James Wood is the first team in The Winchester Star coverage area to win four consecutive state titles since the Clarke County girls’ cross country team captured championships every year from 2004-2007.
