WINCHESTER — Handley senior Jack Boye defeated previously undefeated junior Josh Lucas of James Wood 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 in the Region 4D singles quarterfinals on Monday at the Judges’ Slaughter Tennis Pavilion.

The North No. 4 seed, Boye lost 8-4 and 8-6 in his two regular-season matches with Lucas, the North’s No. 1 seed and The Winchester Star’s reigning Boys’ Tennis Player of the Year.

Boye will take on Salem in Tuesday’s semifinals, which start at 11 a.m. at Handley. The winner of that match will take on the winner of Blacksburg and Charlottesville’s Sean Frank, the North No. 2 seed who beat North No. 3 Greyson Foltz of Sherando 6-0, 6-1 in Monday’s quarterfinals, in the final at 1 p.m.

In the doubles quarterfinals on Monday, the North No. 2 team of Handley’s Boye and Matthew Bosshard won 6-2, 6-4 over the North No. 3 team of James Wood’s Lucas and Ander Pratt-Perez. The semifinals and finals will take place on Wednesday at Handley, and the Judges will take on Salem in the semis. The winner of that match will face the winner of the Charlottesville-Blacksburg match at 1 p.m. in the final. The North No. 1 Black Knights beat the North No. 4 team of Sherando’s Foltz and Sam Brooks 6-0, 6-1 in Monday’s quarterfinals.

In girls’ Region 4D singles quarterfinal action on Monday, North No. 1 Katie Freilich of Sherando won 6-2, 6-2 over North No. 4 Charlottesville and North No. 2 Ellie Bessette won 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 over North No. 3 Violet Quodala of James Wood. In Tuesday’s semis, Freilich will take on Salem and Bessette will face E.C. Glass at 11 a.m., and the winners will meet in the final at 1 p.m.

In doubles action, the No. 1 North team of Sherando’s Freilich and Gabriella Koch won 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals over No. 4 North Charlottesville. The North No. 2 team of Handley’s Bessette and Eleanor Hessberg won 7-5, 7-5 over the North No. 3 team of James Wood’s Quodola and Emma Miller 7-5, 7-5. In Wednesday’s semis, Sherando will face Salem and Handley will face E.C. Glass at 11 a.m., and the winners will meet in the final at 1 p.m.
