CHRISTIANSBURG — James Wood senior Joe Warnagiris won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke to highlight local performances at the Region 4D swimming meet on Saturday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
Warnagiris — the defending Class 4 state champion in both events — won the 200 IM in 1 minute, 55.12 seconds (3.18 seconds ahead of the runner-up) and the 100 breast in 57.72 (5.18 seconds ahead of the runner-up).
Warnagiris led the James Wood boys to third place out of 11 scoring teams with 77 points. Blacksburg won with 114 points and Jefferson Forest took second with 109. Sherando was seventh (36), Millbrook took eighth (23) and Handley did not score.
Blacksburg also edged Jefferson Forest to win the girls’ meet, scoring 143 points to the Cavaliers’ 140. Millbrook placed fourth (61), James Wood was sixth (27), Sherando was seventh (21) and Handley was eighth (11) out of 11 scoring teams.
Other local regional champions were Sherando senior Toby Winston (100 freestyle in 47.73 to win by 0.32) in the boys’ meet and Millbrook junior Riley Pillo (100 breast in 1:10.78 to win by 0.10) in the girls’ meet.
The top five individuals in each event and the top four teams in each relay event on Saturday, as well as those who have state-qualifying times, will compete in the Class 4 state meet next Saturday at the same location.
