Rivalry has added meaning

Courtesy of The Winchester StarWinchester — One night early this week, Mike Bolin sat down with the VHSL power ratings and tried to crunch the numbers for every potential playoff scenario.

It didn’t take long before the James Wood High School football coach stopped and threw his math aside.

“I said, ‘Heck, I just want to beat Handley,’” Bolin said.

Both the Colonels (8-1, 6-0 Northwestern District) and Judges (7-1, 5-0) are likely to return to the postseason this fall, but there’s much more at stake when the local rivals square off at 7 p.m. tonight at Jerry L. Kelican Stadium.

James Wood can clinch its first district championship since 1980. With a victory Handley would remain in the driver’s seat for the outright title and clinch at worst a tie for first place.

The winner will also take home the Barr-Lindon Crimson Apple, awarded by The Winchester Star to the Winchester/Frederick County team with the best record in head-to-head competition.
