Lockhart, Colonels hammer Eagles

WINCHESTER -- James Wood High School's football team demonstrated its offensive diversity on Friday night, getting three touchdowns on the ground and three through the air in a 43-0 non-district romp over Hedgesville, (W.Va.), on Hall of Fame night at Jerry Kelican Stadium.

Running back Brock Lockhart rushed for 220 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Trae Tinsman added a pair of scoring tosses to help the Colonels (3-0) remain unbeaten.

James Wood scored on two of its first three offensive possessions and added a safety in between -- Tripp Lewis' blocked punt out of the end zone -- to take a 16-0 first-quarter lead.

"You got to come out strong early," said Tinsman, who finished 7-of-13 for 97 yards passing and added a 1-yard touchdown run. "You want to get on top right from the start and get the momentum." That was never a problem against the Eagles (1-3), who have dropped three straight since their season-opening victory over Washington, (W.Va.)

Just under four minutes into the game, Tinsman capped an eight-play drive with a 14-yard scoring strike to Harlan Robinson for a 7-0 lead. After the safety put Wood up 9-0, Lockhart took the Colonels' final play of the opening period and raced 46 yards for a touchdown.

Lockhart, who broke Wood's single-game rushing record with a 302-yard performance in the season opener, had runs of 40, 46, 34 and 30 on Friday.

"He really chews up the yardage," Colonels coach Mike Bolin said.

In just three games, Lockhart has rushed for 709 yards, surpassing his season total of 707 last year.

"I didn't expect this," the 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior said. "But it's all about those big boys up front. They've done an awesome job with how they've blocked."

The Colonels finished with 294 yards on the ground and another 111 in the air. Backup quarterback Matt Copley even got into the act with a 4-yard scoring pass to tight end David Alaniz (five catches, 50 yards), who made a nice juggling catch in the back of the end zone for his second TD grab of the night.

"We've got to be balanced on offense, especially when we get into our district," Bolin said. "If we can run and pass that's going to open up more holes for Brock."

Defensively, James Wood forced three turnovers, two coming on interceptions from Lockhart and A.J. Eubank and the other on a Robinson fumble recovery. For the third straight game, the Colonels didn't commit a turnover.

"We don't like to use the 'T' word," said Bolin, hoping not to jinx Wood's good fortune.

"There's a reason why you win games," Tinsman said. "Turnovers are crucial."

After jumping out to its 16-0 first-quarter lead, Wood waited nearly the entire second period before adding to its lead. Tinsman's sneak from a yard out came with just 25 seconds left until halftime and put the Colonels up 22-0.

A Tinsman-to-Alaniz 8-yard hookup early in the third made it 29-0, and Brandon Shiley's 6-yard scoring run late in the third stretched the margin to 36-0.

At halftime Friday, eight new members were officially inducted into James Wood's P. Wendell Dick Athletic Hall of Fame: Frank Scheder (class of 1954), Dennis Lee ('59), Larry Boyd ('69), Bill DeHaven ('69), Lynn Fisher ('88), Kelly Sine Rice ('88), Tommy Walters ('89) and John Bloom (contributor).
