Non-district game still has plenty of meaning to Wood

WINCHESTER- Facing a first-year school in a non-district game at this point of the season typically won't generate a whole lot of buzz in the high school hallways.

But with James Wood's football team able to move a step closer to clinching a berth in the Region II Division 4 playoffs, their trip to Leesburg tonight to face Tuscarora (7 p.m.) certainly carries importance.

"We're going to approach it like we do any other opponent," Wood coach Mike Bolin said.

The Colonels (5-3, 2-1 Northwestern District) can still win a share of the district title next week against Handley, but that goal will be put on hold until they get past the Huskies.

Tuscarora is comprised almost entirely of underclassmen, but they enter tonight with a 4-4 record after beating first-year Group A school East Rockingham 34-15 last week.

Running back Cameron Molina scored three touchdowns in that game, and Bolin said the Huskies feature a number of talented athletes and use a two-quarterback system.

"They're going to be a good team in a few years, I know that for sure," Bolin said.
The Colonels will look to control the game with their defense, a continually improving offensive line, and a rushing attack that's rushed for an average of 246.5 yards per game the past two weeks.

Last week Joel McGreevy (90 yards and a touchdown) and fullback Cory Schrock (104 yards and a touchdown) carried the load after the team got 106 yards and two touchdowns from running back Mark Collie the week before against Skyline.

Wood may also get back running back/defensive back Chris Skinner, who missed last week's game with an injury.

"We have to be fundamentally sound and not try to do to much," Bolin said. "I think our kids have done a really good job with that this year.

"We don't have any superstars, but we've got a bunch of good, solid football players, and we'll take that any day."
