Stephens City — He may be crazy, but you can’t argue with his logic.
“Who’s the beast of the county now?” said Danny Cooper’s uncle over the joyful laughter of James Wood High School’s senior linebacker and tight end. “You is! You is! Love it!”
Cooper’s “crazy Uncle Phil” as he said, was just expressing the joy that all Colonels fans were feeling after an exhilarating 17-14 Northwestern District football victory against Sherando Friday night at Arrowhead Stadium that came down to the final play.
The Warriors’ Lukas Stump missed a 36-yard field goal wide right to set off a wave of joy the likes of which no James Wood fan has ever seen when the opponent was Sherando. The Colonels (7-1, 5-0 Northwestern) defeated the Warriors (5-2, 3-2) for the first time since 1993, Sherando’s first year as a football team. They raised their arms in triumph. They ran to each other and hugged each other. They yelled with delight. They jumped up and down.
