HARRISONBURG — His first trip to the Group AA state golf tournament may not have played exactly how he would have liked it, but if Roger Repasky has his way, he’ll get a couple more cracks at it.
Serving as the only area qualifier, the James Wood sophomore followed up a rough first day (93) by posting a respectable score of 84 at Lakeview Golf Club Tuesday.
Rains, wind and frigid temperature made for difficult playing conditions on Monday, but blue skies and a shining sun greeted the players Tuesday and the scores reflected the change.
“I played a lot better,” said Repasky, who posted two birdies and a number of pars on the par-72 course.
“[Monday] was really tough with it being so cold and with all the rain, but [Tuesday] was a lot better.”
Repasky admitted that nerves played a role in his struggles on the first day — it was the first time he had ever played in the state tournament — and he tried to learn from his mistakes the second time around.
“I just tried to figure out what went wrong and why and correct it,” Repasky said. “It helped that I had a really good group of guys I was playing. They were a big help. It was a great all-around experience.”
And it’s one Repasky hopes he’ll get to enjoy more than once.
Having now seen what some of the best golfers in Virginia look like up close, Repasky plans on making the trip again.
“Now it’s all about working on my game and preparing to make it [to state] the next two years,” Repasky said. “I’m going to practice a lot and hopefully drop five or 10 strokes off my average by next year. I want to go back.”
