FRONT ROYAL — Sherando took fourth as a team and Brett Loy tied for fifth individually with a 1-over 72 to highlight local performances at the seventh annual Skyline Hawks Invitational played on the Red and White nines Tuesday at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club.
Loudoun Valley won the 12-team tournament with a four-player score of 305, four strokes better than runner-up Dominion (309). Sherando recorded a 318, Millbrook was fifth (328), James Wood was seventh (331), Clarke County was eighth (357) and Handley was 11th (403).
Though Loy had a solid round and Collin Ordonez shot a career-best 81 at SVGC, Sherando coach Rob Wright said the Warriors could have played better,
“We struggled a little bit today,” Wright said. “We just didn’t play our best round. Brett was steady. Collin had a great round.
“But we just couldn’t put a couple of more scores together. It was tough out there. The roughs were a little long today, and, as usual, the putting was tough too. We’ve got some things to work on for [the Conference 21 tournament on Sept. 29].”
Mason Scott (81) also figured in Sherando’s top four, and two players shot an 84.
Millbrook’s Ryan McCarty had the second best score among locals with a 77, and he was followed by Brian McGuire (79) and Jeremy Mills (83).
James Wood was paced by Hunter Hall (78), Roger Repasky (79) and Ben Marsh (85), who shot a career-best.
“We played a little bit better today,” James Wood coach David Oates said. “My top two guys stumbled a little bit coming in, but my number four guy shot a career-best.
“Scoring a 331 is pretty good for us coming into the district and conference tournament. Ben Marsh shooting an 85 was a real bright spot. He’s only been playing golf for three months, and I saw a lot of improvement from him today.”
Clarke County was led by Cameron Scheib, whose 78 tied for the third-best score among local players. Brendan Ciaburri shot an 87 and Eddie O’Leary shot an 88.
Handley was led by Nick Mitchell (89) and Jamie Miller (90).
