From Star Staff Reports

FRONT ROYAL- The Sherando High School golf team clinched the Northwestern District regular season title and an automatic Region II berth by sweeping a district tri-match with Millbrook and Skyline Tuesday at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club.

The Warriors (2-1 Northwestern) were led by Cory Hammons' 76 and shot a four-player score of 318, eight strokes better than Millbrook (1-2) and 45 better than Skyline (0-1).

Hammons was supported by Cameron Wiseman (78), and Chris Slater and Kolby Madigan (82 each).

Millbrook's Matt Fazenbaker took first overall with a 74.

The regular season championship is decided by a team's performance in three mini tournaments (which each count 25 percent) plus its record in four dual matches (which makes up the other 25 percent).

One point is awarded for first, two for second, etc., and the team with the lowest average in the four competitions earns the championship.

By finishing first in two minis and tying for first in another, Sherando compiled 3.5 points. By improving to 2-1 in the district, the worst the Warriors can finish is third (with three points) in the dual match standings, which would give them a total of 6.5.

Second-place James Wood already compiled 7 points in the minis, which means a first-place finish in the duals cannot get the Colonels the regular season title.
