CHARLOTTESVILLE — James Wood senior Katie Houser was named the Virginia High School League’s Group 4A state volleyball Player of the Year on Wednesday.
Houser — who has signed to play with Notre Dame next year — helped lead the Colonels to a 26-5 record this year, the Northwestern District title and the school’s first-ever appearance in a state finals match. Four of James Wood’s five losses this year were to Group 4A state champion Loudoun County.
Despite missing her entire junior season because of an injury, Houser finished her career as James Wood’s all-time leader in kills, breaking the record of 1,033 on Oct. 14 against Sherando. Houser led the area with 408 kills during the regular season, and she broke her own school record by getting 36 kills in one match against Jefferson Forest in the 4A North Region semifinals.
