Millbrook rallies to net season sweep over Colonels

WINCHESTER — Millbrook rallied from dropping the first set and from a late second-set deficit to knock off James Wood 21-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-18 in a Class 4 Northwestern District volleyball triumph on Tuesday.

The victory moved the Pioneers (17-3, 10-2) into second place in the district standings. The Colonels (15-6, 9-2) dropped to third heading into their district finale at first-place Fauquier on Thursday. Millbrook completed a season sweep of James Wood.

Grace Frigaard’s four kills led the Colonels to a win in the opening set. Tori Johnson had four kills and an ace for the Pioneers.

Millbrook trailed 24-21 in the second set, but rattled off the final five points to square the match. Johnson had four kills in the set. Jessica Putnam had two kills and two aces for the Colonels.

In a nip-and-tuck third set, Millbrook pulled out the win on Abigail Koeller’s fifth kill. Gillian Kleiderlein had four kills for James Wood.

The fourth set also was close until the final stages. Leading 16-14, the Pioneers closed with a 9-4 run.
