James Wood's Spaid, Patrick sweep VHSL Class 4 volleyball awards
James Wood junior outside hitter Kennedy Spaid repeated as the Player of the Year and Adrienne Patrick earned her third straight Coach of the Year award to highlight the Virginia High School League’s Class 4 All-State volleyball selections that were released on Monday.
Junior outside hitter Brenna Corbin joined Spaid on the Class 4 First Team for James Wood, which defeated Courtland 3-2 for its third consecutive state title on Nov. 23 at the Virginia Commonwealth University Siegel Center in Richmond. Millbrook senior outside hitter Berkeley Konrady was selected to the Second Team.
The 5-foot-11 Spaid recorded a team-high 417 kills in addition to 278 digs, 193 service points and 65 aces (all second on the team) and 22 blocks en route to earning her third straight Class 4 First Team selection. Spaid — who has verbally committed to play beach volleyball for NCAA Division I Arizona State University — is also a two-time Region 4D Player of the Year and a two-time Northwestern District Player of the Year.
Corbin — who has verbally committed to play indoor volleyball with NCAA Division I James Madison University — is also a Class 4 First Team selection for the third time. Corbin led the Colonels in digs (387), aces (87) and service points (298) and ranked second in kills (270).
A fifth-year head coach, Patrick guided the Colonels to a 23-3 record this year to give James Wood a 76-6 mark over the past three seasons. The Colonels won their third straight district and region titles. James Wood’s only defeats were to the Class 5 state champion Riverside, West Virginia Class AAAA state champ Hedgesville, and Class 3 quarterfinalist Kettle Run, a defeat the Colonels avenged by a 3-0 score in the district championship. Patrick was The Star’s Coach of the Year in 2022 and 2023.
Konrady is an All-State selection for the first time. She led the Pioneers with 322 kills, ranked second in digs with 183, and also had 50 aces and 24 blocks.
