Expanded playoffs give more schools chance at regionals

Winchester — Though his Judges had just clinched the Northwestern District regular-season title, Tommy Dixon couldn’t shake a puzzled look as he stood outside the visitor’s locker room at Skyline High School late last month.
Asked about the team’s postseason prospects, the longtime Handley boys’ basketball coach dug deep into one of his front pants pockets and fished out a sheet of paper folded several times.
On the paper: 21 criteria used to seed and determine which Division 3 and 4 teams will qualify for their respective Region II tournaments. In other words, hieroglyphics for coaches more familiar with Xs and Os.
