Baseball - Wildcats 8, Colonels 7

WINCHESTER — Warren County scored six runs in the first inning, then held off a James Wood rally to win on Saturday at R. Charles Hott Field.

The Colonels (3-4) — who had a three-game winning streak snapped — scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut their deficit to 7-5. The Wildcats added a run in the seventh before the Colonels plated two in the bottom of the half of the frame.

Aden Payne and Hayden Cunningham had RBI singles for Wood in the seventh inning to make the score 8-7, with the latter hit coming off newly inserted Warren County pitcher Bryce Post. But with one out and runners on first and second, Post got a fielder’s choice groundout and a strikeout to close out the game.

James Wood (eight hits) was led by Colby Monroe (3 for 4 with a run) and Tanner George (double and three RBIs). George and Payne combined to allow only two runs (one earned, charged to Payne) and four hits in 6.1 innings of relief pitching. George struck out five batters in 4.1 innings and Payne struck out two batters.
