James Wood High School 18-year-old senior
Sport: Soccer. Position: Midfielder
Parents: Sharon Kite and Bill Koons. Hometown: Winchester
What do you love about soccer: I like the fast-paced play, and I like that it’s a game that requires maximum effort all the time. There’s no breaks, there’s no stopping, and I like that constant grind.
Most memorable moment in soccer: Last year. We didn’t have a great season — we won three games — but we beat Millbrook, which was a very good team last year (10-7-1 record). It was 3-2 on a Saturday morning. It was hot, humid. One of our younger guys, Aidan Houser, scored all three of the goals.
Three people you can have dinner with, dead or alive: Conan O’Brien; he inspires me to not take everything in life so seriously, and seize a moment for humor whenever possible. [Physicist] Richard Feynman; he’s one of the greatest scientists of all time, and he has a knack for teaching people and learning things. I admire his ability to talk with a layman about things like quantam mechanics and connect with people of all different types of background and educational levels. And [biologist] James Watson; he’s definitely my hero, because I’m interested in biology. His work with the DNA strructure just stood out to me and inspired me to do my own research in the future.
Favorite teacher: My eighth-grade English teacher [Suzanne] Miller. Even though I’m not necessarily pursuing English in the future, I would say she had the biggest impact on me in terms of learning how to be a better student.
Favorite athlete: [Real Madrid midfielder] Gareth Bale
Favorite sports team: N.E. Patriots
Favorite movie: “Good Will Hunting”
Favorite book: “Leviathan” by Thomas Hobbes
Favorite song: “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra
Plans after high school: I’m going to Old Dominion University. Undergrad, I’ll be a biochemistry major and double minor in biomedical engineering and psychology. I want to get my master’s degree in microbiology and humanology. I want to go to medical school and pre-med at ODU. At medical school I want to do cardiology and hopefully take my Master’s and apply it to a teaching profession while I’m a practicing physician in the future.
