BOYS’ TENNIS - Conference 21 West Tournament
WINCHESTER — Handley’s Nick Mueller will play Harrisonburg’s Jason Muan for the boys’ singles title at the Conference 21 West tennis tournament today.
Mueller, the tournament’s second seed, whipped Millbrook’s Hayden Wilfong 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals. He will face the top-seeded Muan, a finalist last year who outlasted James Wood’s Evan Dokken 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, in today’s final at 11 a.m. The title match is slated for Handley’s Slaughter Tennis Pavilion, but will move to Winchester Country Club in case of inclement weather.
Mueller, a sophomore, is unbeaten during his career. Both Mueller and Muan, who have not played against each other this season, secured berths in the 4A West Regionals.
Wilfong advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sherando’s Cameron Spieles. Dokken knocked off Woodgrove’s Darin Avila 6-3, 7-5 to advance.
In doubles, Dokken and Noah Borromeo advanced to the semifinals with a 7-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Spieles and Jake Baggett. Top-seeded Mueller and Jack Volinsky and second seeded Wilfong and Nathan Wiens each had byes. The doubles semifinals start at 1 p.m., with the finals at 3 p.m.
