WINCHESTER- After both won in singles, Matt Cress and Greg Meuser teamed up for the clinching point at No. 1 doubles to lead the host Pioneers to a 5-2 win over James Wood in the Northwestern District tournament play-in match Wednesday.

The No. 4-seeded Pioneers (5-12) advance to face No. 1 Sherando in the semifinals today at 3 in Stephens City.

Cress (a 6-4, 6-2 winner at No. 1 singles) and Meuser (a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 4) earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles.

Millbrook also got singles wins from Tre Weaver (No. 5) and Andrew Doumont (No. 6).

James Wood's wins came from Chris Haskiell at No. 2 singles and Preston Kemp at No. 3.
