Russell to coach James Wood girls' soccer team

WINCHESTER — James Wood High School has named Donavan Russell its new girls’ head soccer coach after Russell spent the 2018 season as an assistant.

Russell, a 1993 James Wood High School graduate, succeeds Jim Carden, who led the Colonels for 11 seasons before retiring in May. The duo helped James Wood set a school record for wins in a 10-8 season this spring.

Prior to last season, Russell spent four years as an assistant coach for James Wood’s boys’ soccer team.

In addition to his coaching duties at James Wood, Russell coached from 2005-10 with Winchester Upward Soccer and has coached Winchester United girls’ soccer since 2010.

Russell said, “I’m looking forward to getting back together with the team for offseason workouts, especially in my new capacity as head coach. We are coming off of a record-breaking season and I want to make sure we continue to improve and build upon that success.”

James Wood coordinator of student activities Craig Woshner said, “Coach Carden did an outstanding job building our girls’ soccer program and we fully expect Coach Russell to take us to the next level.”
