Wood's Russell named Region 4D top girls' soccer coach

James Wood coach Donavan Russell was selected as the Region 4D Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year on Tuesday after leading the Colonels to their first region title in program history.

The Colonels (15-1-3) had three players selected to the First Team, one to the Second Team, and three to Honorable Mention. Class 4 Northwestern District champion Handley had the same number of First Team and Second Team picks and two players selected as Honorable Mention.

First Team selections: James Wood: junior forward Jolie Jenkins, senior midfielder McKenna Newcome, senior defender Maddie Heustis; Handley: junior forward Emeryce Worrell, senior midfielder Madison Hobson, freshman defender Reese Craig.

Second Team selections: James Wood: sophomore defender Meadow Falkner; Handley: senior goalkeeper Alli Roberts.

Honorable Mention selections: James Wood: senior forward Jasmine Hackman; sophomore midfielder Avery Wright; freshman goalkeeper Alaynah McGuire. Handley: sophomore forward Mia Hudson, senior defender Mia Kern.

Jefferson Forest senior midfielder Izzy Wedemyer, who will play for Liberty University next year, was named the Player of the Year.
