James Wood Girls’ Tennis Earns Region Berth

Purcellville — James Wood finished off a 6-3 win over Loudoun County that was postponed Monday and then beat Woodgrove 5-4 to advance to the Conference 21 Tournament finals and automatically qualify for the 4A North Region Tournament Wednesday.

The Colonels (8-6) took four of six singles sets and two of three doubles sets against the Raiders in the quarterfinals.

No. 1 Fae Schweitzer (6-1, 6-1), No. 2 Ashley Hillyard (6-0, 7-5), No. 3 Katie Schott (6-3, 6-3) and No. 6 Clarissa Nicely (6-3, 6-1) all won in singles, and Schweitzer and Hillyard (6-3, 6-2) and Nicely and Haley Burke (2-6, 6-2, 6-1) won in doubles).

In the semifinal match against the Wolverines, James Wood was again led by Schweitzer (6-1, 6-1), Schott (6-0, 7-6 — 7-3 tiebreaker) and Nicely (6-2, 6-3), and Allie Cooper won (1-6, 6-4, 6-2) at No. 4 singles.

Needing one more point for the win, the Colonels got it from the No. 1 doubles team of Schweitzer and Hillyard (7-5, 6-2).

James Wood will take on Dominion in the Conference 21 Tournament finals on Friday.
