SOFTBALL - Warriors 6, Colonels 5

WINCHESTER — Down two runs, River Baird hit a grand slam in the sixth inning for Sherando, and the Warriors went on to defeat James Wood in Conference 21 West and Northwestern District action on Wednesday.

The Colonels led 4-2 when Baird hit her home run for Sherando (11-8, 4-1 conference, 5-2 district), which clinched the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament with the win and will have a bye into Monday’s semifinals.

Baird picked up the win by pitching four innings of relief. She allowed three runs (one earned), walked two and struck out four.

Also for Sherando, Tori Seymour went 4 for 4 with a home run, triple and three runs.

James Wood (13-6, 3-2 conference, 5-2 district) was led by Lauren King (five innings, eight strikeouts), Lindsey Anderson (1 for 2, home run, two walks), Lani Spielman (2 for 3, double, walk) and Camryn Rizzari (2 for 4, home run). The Colonels will be the third seed in the conference tournament and host No. 6 Millbrook at 6 p.m. in Friday’s quarterfinals.
