Softball: Three Colonels sign with colleges
James Wood outfielder/pitcher Cadence Rieg, first baseman/pitcher Jenna Shull, and outfielder Skyla Compton each signed to play at the college level in a ceremony at James Wood on Wednesday.
Rieg will play for NCAA Division III Shenandoah University, which went 15-25 overall and 8-12 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference last year.
Rieg led the Colonels and was second in the area with a .536 batting average and .608 on-base percentage last season. Rieg drove in 28 runs, scored 37 and swiped 14 bases. In the circle, she went 10-2 with a 3.50 ERA. She was the Class 4 Northwestern District Player of the Year, the Region 4C Co-Player of the Year and a Second Team Class 4 All-State pick.
Rieg will study biology with a background in pre health.
Shull will play for NCAA Division III Mary Baldwin University in Staunton. The Squirrels went 19-17-1 overall and 10-8 in the USA South last year.
Shull went 11-1 with a 3.57 ERA and was third in the area with 93 strikeouts last year. She also hit .371 at the plate with 23 RBIs. Was an All-Region 4C and All-Class 4 Northwestern District First Team selection and a Second Team Class 4 All-State pick.
Shull will study elementary education.
Compton will play for Potomac State College in Keyser, W.Va. The Catamounts of the National Junior College Athletic Association went 43-5 and played in the Division II World Series last year.
Compton had a .461 batting average and led the Colonels and was second in the area by scoring 38 runs last year. She had a .518 on-base percentage and was a Second Team All-Class 4 Northwestern District selection.
Compton will study civil engineering.
