Wood softball edges Handley

From Star Staff Reports

WINCHESTER — The James Wood High School softball team rallied for three runs in the fourth inning and held on to defeat Handley 3-2 Tuesday despite a two-hitter from Judges pitcher Chelsea Hamric.

Hamric retired the first nine batters she faced before Whitney Dennis led off the bottom of the fourth with a double.

Handley then made errors on two Colonels bunts, bringing home the first run of the game.

Rachel Largent added an RBI infield single, and Erin McCarthy scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Lauren Myers got the win for James Wood (3-13, 1-4 Northwestern District), allowing three hits and no runs in five innings before leaving with pain from a recurring rib cage injury.

McCarthy allowed two runs (one earned) in two innings to get the save.

Handley (0-15, 0-5) scored both its runs on an Ali Fritts double in the top of the sixth.
