TRACK AND FIELD - Colonels win J.J. Updike meet
HARRISONBURG — Sophomore Rene Rosso won three events to lead James Wood to first place at the 16-school J.J. Updike Last Chance Invitational on Saturday at Harrisonburg High School, and Millbrook was the winning team in the boys’ meet.
The Colonels scored 129 points, and Fluvanna County was second with 92. Millbrook was fourth with 46 points, Sherando was fifth with 45 and Handley was 11th with 17.
Rosso won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.36 seconds, the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 4 inches and the triple jump (37-0.5, breaking the school record she set last year).
Also leading the Colonels was the 4x100 team of Princess Sales, Sophia Addison, Bailey Blais and Kara Norman (first in 50.56); the 4x400 team of Blais, Addison, Becca Ferrulli and Rosso (first in 4:18.27); Grace Greene (second in the discus, 112-5, third in the shot put, 35-6); Emma Hammond (second in the triple jump, 34-10, third in the long jump, 15-7); Ferrulli (second in the 400, 1:04.06); Jamie Marcy (second in the long jump, 15-9.5;the 4x800 team (second in 11:01.68) and Blais (third in the 400, 1:04.50).
Millbrook was led by Mellany Groll (second in the 800, 2:28.03); Kaycee Cox-Philyaw (second in the 1,600, 5:32.78); Hannah Croyle (third in the 1,600, 5:34.13); Ava Derrick (third in the triple jump, 32-9.75) and the 4x400 team (third in 4:23.28).
Sherando was led by Ania Summers (first in the 200, 27.02, second in the 100, 12.85); Paige Conner (second in the 3,200, 11:56.92); Victoria Reese (third in the 3,200, 11:58.42) and Allison Combs (third in the discus, 107-4).
In the boys’ meet, Millbrook scored 72 points, Handley was second with 58, James Wood was third with 51 and Sherando was seventh with 39.
For the Pioneers, Austin Devart won the 110 hurdles in 15.56 and took second in the 300 hurdles in 42.11. Millbrook was also led by the 4x100 team (first in 44.69); Josh Davis (second in the 200, 23.26, third in the 100, 11.50); Andrew Smith (second in the 110 hurdles, 16.26, third in the 300 hurdles, 42.13) and Antwon Rodgers (second in the long jump, 20-9.5, third in the triple jump, 40-0.75).
Handley was led by Aaron Arslan (first in the 1,600, 4:34.57); Micah Strother (second in the 100, 11.37, third in the long jump, 20-0.5); John Delaney (second in the 1,600, 4:35.02); Kevin Heredia (second in the 3,200, 10:24.02) and the 4x100 team (second in 45.28).
James Wood was led by Chris Vitagliano (first in the long jump, 21-5), Donte Henry (second in the triple jump, 41-0), the 4x400 team (second in 3:41.34), the 4x800 team (second in 8:34.54).
Sherando was led by the 4x800 team of Billy Brown, James Kelly, Jacob Carr and Tom Powers (first in 8:32.69), Thomas Shea (second in the 800, 2:03.89, third in the 1,600, 4:39.40) and Powers (third in the 800, 2:04.32).
