Rosso wins NEC Rookie of the Week

James Wood graduate and Mount Saint Mary’s University freshman Rene Rosso was named the Women’s Rookie of the Week by the NCAA Division I Northeast Conference on Tuesday.

Rosso — The Winchester Star Girls’ Track and Field Athlete of the Year as a Colonel senior — leapt to the Northeast Conference lead in the high jump while competing at the Navy Winter Invitational on Saturday. Rosso jumped 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4.25 inches) during her first-ever collegiate competition.

Rosso, who cleared the bar on her first attempt at the height, finished in a tie for third place at Navy. She enters the season’s second week with a three-centimeter advantage over the NEC’s second-ranked high jumper.
