Boys' 4A - State Track Meet
LYNCHBURG — Juniors Jaishaun Offutt of Handley (shot put) and Noah Harris of Sherando (high jump) each won boys' state titles on the first day of the Class 4 track & field meet on Friday at the University of Lynchburg.
Offutt broke his own school record to cap a sweep of the indoor and outdoor shot put titles. Offutt putted the shot 57 feet, 2.5 inches on his first throw. Top-seeded Tate Foerster of Tuscarora, a junior, threw 57-2 on his final attempt to place second.
Other All-State (top eight performers in the shot put were Sherando senior Ethan Gonzalez (third, personal record of 54-7.5) and Warriors junior Quincy Walker (seventh, 49-11).
Harris set a personal record of 6-7 to win the high jump by two inches over JB Santos of Tuscarora. Handley junior Hassan Akanbi also earned All-State honors by placing eighth with a mark of 6-1.
A few sprinters qualified for Saturday's eight-person finals and guaranteed themselves All-State status.
Handley junior Emeryce Worrell had the top qualifying in the 100 (12.20 seconds) and 200 (24.87) in the girls' meet, while Millbrook junior Jada Arrington finished third in the 100 (12.32) and 200 (25.37).
Handley sophomore Rylan Stribling had the No. 7 time in the boys' 100 (10.93).
Jefferson Forest is in first place in the boys' meet with 26 points. Tuscarora is second with 20, Sherando is third with 19 and Handley is tied for fifth with 11. Manor and Tuscarora are tied for first in the girls' meet with 21 points.
The meet concludes Saturday, with action starting at 9 a.m.

James Wood girls: 4x800 (Lauren Thompson, Katelyn Palmer, Ally Oliver, Ruby Ostrander), 11th, 10:05.54.
Millbrook girls: Jillian Taylor, discus, tied for 10th, 103-10.
Nei sets school record in Class 2 100 prelims
HARRISONBURG — Clarke County freshman Isaac Nei set a school record of 10.99 seconds in the 100 meters to record the third-fastest time in the preliminaries on Friday on the first day of the Class 2 meet at James Madison University.
Nei will participate in Saturday's finals and is guaranteed All-State status.
Both of the Eagles' 4x800 relays placed in the top eight to earn All-State honors. The boys' team of Matthew Lisk, Matthew Stroot, Brody Ellis and Jackson Ellis placed fourth in 8:31.84. The girls' team took fifth in 10:47.14.
Will Booker placed seventh in the high jump (6-2).
The meet concludes Saturday, with action starting at 9 a.m.
