Front Royal — When Matt Johnson came to the bench late in the third quarter Friday night, the James Wood High School senior forward could probably sense his coach was not real happy with his play.
A returning first-team all-Northwestern District pick, Johnson had just one field goal and four points total as the Colonels headed to the fourth period trailing Warren County by two points.
“I took him out and challenged him,” James Wood boys’ basketball coach Al Smith said. “I thought he could play better. He responded in a positive manner, and I thought he played very well the last five minutes of the basketball game.”
Five straight points by Johnson with under three minutes left gave the Colonels the lead for good, as James Wood overcame a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter to give Smith his first win, 63-57 at Warren County.
