Armel’s 38 points sets Wood mark

Winchester — Six years ago, former James Wood Middle School physical education teacher Kim Maxwell taught one of her students how to shoot a basketball. In Monday’s shootout with Brentsville at James Wood High School, that student used those teachings to break Maxwell’s school record for points in a single game.
Heather Armel’s 38 points bested Maxwell’s mark by four, and she led her Colonels to a 73-69 overtime victory over the Northwestern District rival Tigers.
Maxwell’s record had stood at Wood since 1979.
“I really admire Mrs. Maxwell,” Armel said. “She taught me how to shoot a basketball. It’s amazing, and one of my dreams (was) to use what she taught me to break her record. I can tell you it’s something that I will always remember and tell my kids about some day.”
