Athlete Spotlight: James Wood High School girls' basketball player Brenna Prunty
James Wood High School 16-year-old junior
Sport: Basketball. Position: Shooting guard
Parents: Rob and Erin Prunty
Hometown: Wallkill, N.Y., we moved here when I was 10.
What do you love about basketball: I love that it is such a team sport. You have to rely on everyone to be good. No one can do it on their own. It takes everyone.
Most memorable moment in basketball: In seventh grade when I was at Frederick County Middle School, I made a 3-point, buzzer-beater against Aylor, which is like our biggest rival school. I remember everyone rushing out and hugging me on the court.
Most embarrassing moment in basketball: In eighth grade, I think it was the last day of school and I had basketball practice for AAU. We were doing backward sprints and I fell backwards and broke both of my wrists. I had them in casts all summer.
Three people you can have dinner with, dead or alive: Will Ferrell, he’s hilarious. I think all of his movies are so funny and it would be so fun to have dinner with him; Ronald Reagan because he was a really good leader and so likeable to everyone. I think he could give good advice; my great grandparents (Prunty and Mooney) because I never met them, so it would be cool to see how they are.
What’s the best athletic advice you’ve ever received: “Don’t think, just play.” I always overthink and I always play my best when I’m playing with my instinct. My dad told me that.
If you could go on a trip anywhere in the world, where would you go: Greece, it’s so pretty there.
Favorite teacher: My seventh grade English teacher Miss [Suzanne] Miller. She had such a good energy and I was never bored in her class.
Favorite athlete: Derek Jeter
Favorite team: Pittsburgh Steelers
Favorite movie: “Mamma Mia”
Favorite TV show: “The Office”
Favorite song: “Best Part” by Daniel Caesar
Favorite food: Macaroni and cheese
Plans after high school: I don’t know where I want to go, but I know I want to go to a four-year college for sure. I think I want to be a physician’s assistant. I first was interested in being a physician, but then I realized how long that would take me. A physician’s assistant is the same thing with less schooling.
